This page introduces you to the side-by-side text viewer.
Accessing the side-by-side text viewer
When you enter the text-viewer, you will see a list of all the -texts edited for this edition. The work-text is listed first, and the manuscript-texts are listed under their parent, the version-text.
To access the text-viewer, just click on the -text you want to see.
Understanding the side-by-side text viewer
The drop-down menu
When you enter the text-viewer, whatever text you selected will be displayed in the left-hand text-box. You can maximise this to full-screen view by clicking the maximise button in the top-right hand corner
To display a different -text in either the right-hand or the left-hand text-box, click on the right-hand arrow next to the words 'Select text' in the right-hand box.
The drop down menu will then appear.
Immediately, you will see a 'Jump to' option, allowing you to see immediately the Work (W), Version (V), and Manuscript (MS) -texts.
Click on the one you want.
The versions are arranged according to the number assigned to each version (V1-V6
The boxed 'W' denotes that the parent of each version is the work. You can click on the names of any of the versions to display their version-text.
The manuscripts are arranged according to the alphabetical order of their by-name (thus B is the first, followed by C, then CA and so on).
Next to the repository and shelfmark of the manuscript, you will see a V, followed by a number (e.g. V3, V4). That denotes the parent of each manuscript-text, that is, to which version that manuscript-text belongs. This is for ease of reference. Click on the name to display the text you would like.
Your viewer window should therefore look like this:
Using the side-by-side viewer
The side-by-side viewer allows you to compare any two -texts you want.
- You can compare two manuscript-texts of the same version
- You can compare two manuscript-texts of different versions
- You can compare two version-texts
- You can compare either a work-text with the version-text
The possibilities are endless.
You can compare text in either Latin original or modern English translation. Click on the button in the title window to change views.
If you are interested in reading the text easily, we recommend choosing a manuscript-text in the left-hand viewer window and either a version-text, the work-text or a different manuscript-text in the right-hand viewer to compare the unsettled regions.
Like medieval readers, who might only have had one copy to read, our edition gives you an immediate entry into the individual manuscript copies of a work. But unlike a medieval reader, the version- and work-texts show you exactly how that manuscript-text relates to the entire corpus of surviving manuscript copies of the work being edited.
